چکیده

Al-Si-Mg-Ni(-Cu) alloys are widely used in the automotive industry. They have the advantage of low weight associated with low coefficient of thermal expansion and excellent mechanical properties – mainly at high temperatures. The corrosion resistance of these alloys in coastal area, particularly sea water, however is not yet known. In this investigation, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization have been used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of Al-6Si-0.5Mg2Ni (-2Cu) alloys in simulated sea water environments. The potentiodynamic polarization curves reveal that 2 wt% Cu content alloy (Alloy-2) is more prone to corrosion than the Cu free alloy (Alloy-1). But the EIS test results showed that corrosion resistance or charge transfer resistance (Rct) increases with the addition of Cu. Due to addition of Cu and thermal treatment, the magnitude of open circuit potential (OCP), corrosion potential (Ecorr) and pitting corrosion potential (Epit) of Al-6Si-0.5Mg-2Ni alloy in NaCl solution were shifted to the more noble direction. Keywords—Al-Si alloy, potentiodynamic polarization, EIS, SEM.

Effect of 2wt% Cu addition on tensile properties and fracture behavior of Al-6Si-0.5Mg-2Ni alloy at various strain rates were studied. The solution treated Al-6Si-0.5Mg-2Ni (-2Cu) alloys, were aged isochronally for 1 hour at temperatures up to 300C. The uniaxial tension test was carried out at strain rate ranging from 10s to 10s in order to investigate the strain rate dependence of tensile prop...

Effect of Cu content on the Electrochemical Corrosion Behavior of Peak-aged Al-6Si-0.5Mg Alloys in Sodium Chloride Solution

The purpose of this study is to understand the electrochemical corrosion behavior of 1wt% Cu content Al-6Si-0.5Mg alloy in 0.1M NaCl solution. The potentiodynamic polarization curves reveal that 1wt% Cu content alloy is less prone to corrosion than the Cu free alloy. The EIS test results show that corrosion resistance or polarization resistance (Rct) increases with the addition of 1wt% Cu to Al...

Corrosion Behavior of Al-2wt%Cu Alloy Processed By Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB) Process

Accumulative roll bonding (ARB) imposes severe plastic strain on materials without changing the specimen dimensions. ARB process is mostly appropriate for practical applications because it can be performed readily by the conventional rolling process. An Al-2wt%Cu alloy was subjected to ARB process up to a strain of 4.8. Stacking of materials and conventional roll-bonding are repeated in the pro...

Effect of Ageing Temperature on the Mechanical Properties of Al-6Si-0.5Mg Cast Alloys with Cu Additions Treated by T6 Heat Treatment

Effect of artificial ageing temperature on the mechanical properties of Al-6Si-0.5Mg alloy containing 0.5 – 4 wt% Cu was studied. The solution treated alloys containing different amounts of Cu were aged isochronally for 1 hour at temperatures up to 300C. The precipitation stages during ageing were monitored by hardness measurements. Tensile and impact properties were determined by standard test...
